How it works
Gross Margin = (Revenue − COGS) ÷ Revenue. Net Profit = Gross Profit − Fixed Costs. Break-Even Revenue = Fixed Costs ÷ Gross Margin.
Example
$20,000 revenue, $8,000 COGS, $5,000 fixed costs → 60% gross margin, $12,000 gross profit, $7,000 net profit, $8,333 break-even revenue.
FAQ
What counts as COGS vs. fixed costs?
COGS scales with sales (materials, production, payment processing); fixed costs don’t (rent, salaries, software subscriptions).
What’s a healthy margin?
Varies hugely by industry — services often run 50–80% gross margin, ecommerce often 20–50%.
